“Running a 100 mile race is not and has never been a successful way of dealing with depression or addiction. It has never been recommended to anyone by any medical professional ever, mainly because it’s fucking stupid and doesn’t work.”
Allie grew up dreaming of the music industry. It was all she ever wanted: triple-A passes to the greatest musical events in history; friendships with mega-stars; and a gloriously fulfilling life in the coolest job in the world. But when years of unrequited applications finally yielded her dream job, a decade of soul-crushing anxiety would ensue, giving way to self-destructive, weaponised depression and a nihilistic addiction that would ultimately have people kicking in doors to save her life.
Then she discovered running: a panacea to all her problems - a space where mental and physical endurance would coalesce to quieten the demons in her mind and body. Only it wasn’t. Because running can’t save you. And it turns out that bottles of wine do not provide adequate nutritional support for ultra marathons. Nor is it wise to prioritise beer over rehydration salts on a multi-day test race through uncharted jungle. And (maybe unsurprisingly to some) consistently running hundreds of miles on crushing hangovers over terrain that would break the average special forces operative is ultimately unlikely to yield much more than a cataclysmic mental and physical breakdown.
Based on the searingly honest, often shocking, yet incredibly funny first hand account by The National Running Awards Coach of the Year, and one of The Guardian’s most inspiring British female adventurers, There is No Wall is a redemption story for our time, where the worst demons of all are the ones inside our heads.
