In the furthest reaches of the fog-shrouded Orkneys, perennial gloom fuels the age-old myth of an island that vanishes into the mist. Locals still murmur ancient stories of a seal-woman, eternally fettered in subjugated love to the man who tricked her out of her seal-skin. Trapped in human form, she may never return to the sea until she can reclaim her skin for herself.
When Leo’s estranged father dies, it falls to him to leave New York and return to the distant Scottish family home he’s always avoided to scatter the ashes. Careening towards a high-society wedding he thinks he wants, Leo is forced to re-examine the nature of his relationship when he forges a connection with a local Orkney bar manager who seems to intuitively understand him in a way no one has before. And here, in a place where past and present inexorably converge, the barrier between real and myth begins to blur.
Bit-by-bit, as the trappings, technologies and securities of modern society are stripped away, Leo uncovers rules and requirements set in motion long before his time. The slightest misstep will take him over the edge, ensnaring him in his family’s inescapably dark history. And the further he travels back along that road, the more the sins of his forefathers will clamour and claw for retribution...
“What is the mind’s Ultima Thule? It will always call to us. From beyond the mists of time, it will draw us to itself.”
