Sam Duncan is a divorced, charming and manipulative Hollywood studio exec whose life unravels over Christmas. When the studio’s latest film – an atrocious sci-fi adaptation of Moby Dick starring Keanu Reeves – bombs at a test screening, the studio head gives Sam five days to save the picture or lose his job. Meanwhile, his three children serve him with emancipation papers for being persistently absent in their lives and an all-round pretty terrible dad. Then Sam learns his estranged father has died in Ireland.
Forced to travel back to his childhood home for the Christmas Eve funeral and promising his children his undivided attention over the holiday period, Sam must work clandestinely to salvage the film and his job without losing his family for ever.
In a house full of childhood ghosts, Sam discovers his father’s only legacy: an unfinished series of letters called “The 50 Things,” containing life lessons about what truly matters. As Sam grapples with family revelations and his children’s distrust, the missing ‘Things’ become all the more portentous. Through encounters with his father’s ghost and an unexpected meeting with Keanu Reeves (found camping in a nearby castle) Sam slowly begins to discover what really matters. Ultimately forced to choose between family and job, will Sam manage to discern the missing Things in time?
The 50 Things is a funny, emotional new holiday fable in the tradition of A Christmas Carol or It’s A Wonderful Life that will rekindle our belief in the important Things in life.
